Naturalisation is the official administrative act by which the country confirms the status of a citizen (i. e. citizenship) of another country.
Obtaining Cypriot citizenship by naturalisation means that a foreigner is endowed with all the rights and obligations provided to citizens of that country.
An application for naturalisation is submitted by the foreigner on the basis of seven consecutive years lived legally in the Republic of Cyprus, taking into account if the applicant has permanently and lawfully resided the last 12 months in the country (preceding the date of submission by the application).
The above statement should be accompanied by the following documents:
- original + copy of the birth certificate of the applicant;
- original + copy of the marriage certificate of the applicant;
- original + copy (if necessary) of the certificate of dissolution of the applicant’s marriage;
- the original certificate of the absence of the applicant’s criminal record issued by the police;
- original + copy of pages of the applicant’s passport, as well as all the stamps of arrival and departure from the Republic of Cyprus during the last seven years preceding the date of application;
- the original statement of the number of years lived by the applicant in Cyprus;
- original + copy of the last valid permit to stay on the island;
- original + copy Alien Book (ID-card);
- the original two ads from the newspaper about your wish to apply for citizenship;
- Two photos with stamps, and notarized.
Documents, issued abroad, must meet the following criteria:
- The documents must be translated into English / Greek and notarized.
They must be certified:
- by Apostille, if the country has signed The Hague Convention of 1961;
- or if the country has not signed the international convention, the document is sealed, in the applicant’s country, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the embassy/consulate in the applicant’s country of the Republic of Cyprus, and further seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus.
If a country had not signed The Hague Convention and had no embassy / consulate of the Republic of Cyprus, the documents stamped in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the applicant countries after the nearest Embassy / Consulate, which is accredited in the Republic of Cyprus.
