New obstacle for Cyprus reunification talks. What are the prospects?
A new round of negotiations on reunification of Cyprus has barely started, but the leader of the occupied territory already made a controversial statement.
At the second meeting with Nikos Anastasiadis, Mustafa Akinchi said that all consultations will be put on hold in July this year. Turkish newspaper Hurriyet suggests that the reason for that is gas and oil exploration works, which are planned to start in July in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.
Akinci believes that island’s natural resources belong to all Cyprus people – living in both north and south. In the interview, the leader also mentioned attacks carried on Turkish Cypriot community members, but did not specify attack details.
Some analysts suggest that Cyprus reunification talks is a subject for bargaining, rather than means of resolving a conflict.
