On the EU–Turkey summit dedicated to the migration crisis, Greece and Cyprus has expressed their concerns due to the request of Ankara to speed up the process of Turkey’s ascension to the EU.
The association agreement between EU and Turkey was signed in 1963. However, the negotiations commenced in 2005. Since then, the sides agreed upon 14 out of 35 requirements (which must be fulfilled by Turkey in order to meet the EU standards). The negotiations were complicated due to the disagreements, which led to their delays. The Turkey’s position on the Cyprus problem remains the main obstacle.
