Two fires broke out simultaneously in Mazotos and Kornos area. According to the representative of the Fire Service – Andreas Cattis, fires destroyed hectares of trees and wild greenery.
In Mazotos, 3 hectares of olive trees were burnt, and in Kornos, the flame destroyed one hectare of pine trees and wild vegetation. Fire was brought under control by the Fire Service team, who used fire trucks, tractors and excavators, as well as a helicopter. The causes of the fires are now being investigated.
Last summer fires in Cyprus destroyed more than 18 sq. km of forested areas and caused 112 million euro damage. Cyprus government has developed a set of fire safety measures to prevent such desasters.
