The Lakatamia Municipality banned the Easter bonfires at its territory. Moreover, the collection of wood is forbidden on all public and private territories. The ban is based on the Municipal Normative Acts of 1985.
The Engomi Municipality also supported this initiative, describing the bonfires as “noisy and dangerous occurrence”. Other measures for patrolling and elimination of the Easter bonfires were adopted at the meeting between police and Municipal councils of Nicosia.
Last year, the fire brigades have extinguished more than 20 bonfires.
