The leader of the socialist party EDEK Mr. Marinos Sizopoulos suggests to organise the referendum before the new round of the negotiations will start. He believes that before the two sides will reach a consensus, it is necessary to find out public opinion about the rotational presidency, temporary presence of Turkish troops on the island and possible acceptance of Turkish settlers.
He also added that “public cannot remain passive, because these are key aspects, which will determine the final agreement”. Earlier, the EDEK party rejected the idea of creating a two-zone federation of Cyprus.
Last month, the negotiations halted because the leader of the Turkish-Cypriots left the meeting. Most likely, the negotiations will resume after the constitutional referendum in Turkey, which is scheduled fro the middle of April.
