The association for prevention and elimination of domestic violence in the families ha informed the MPs about the grim statistics: approximately 1000 women every year are suffering from domestic violence. However, only 1/3 of the victims report to the police. The Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives has already started to examine this matter and promised to get experts, representatives of ministry of Justice and women organisations to participate in the search for the solution.
In 2015 Cyprus has signed the Istanbul convention of the Council of Europe to combat domestic violence. However it is yet to be ratified.
