Rhodes and Santorini are one of the most popular tourist destinations of the Greek islands, famous for their beautiful scenery, cozy streets and cities and excellent cuisine. We will not delve into the history and culture of these islands, but instead, try to tell you how they differ from Cyprus in terms of holidaymaking.
Cyprus vs Rhodes
One of the largest islands of the Dodecanese – Rhodes – is quite popular among our countrymen. In its location the island is closer to Turkey than to the Greek mainland and is washed by two seas – the Mediterranean and the Aegean, so the climate in different parts of the island is somewhat different. On the other hand, it provides a natural diversity; on the island you can find beautiful beaches, small and secluded coves and feel the contrast between the small green valleys and mountain scenery.
Rhodes is loved by many representatives of the Greek and Turkish bohemians who prefer a secluded vacation in the mountain villages of the island. Fans of excursions also will not be bored – they will be able to get acquainted with the architectural heritage of the Crusaders and visit interesting medieval castles, explore the ancient city and learn their history. A place of specific interest for experienced travelers is the so-called summer residence of Mussolini in Rhodes. Built by the Count de Vecchio, once the former governor of the island it was maintained by the Italian regime dictator. However, Mussolini may have never been to the island, and the house probably has no relation to him.
Probably it does not make sense to compare the number of attractions on the islands. Both Rhodes and Cyprus are famous for their historical monuments, among which the inquisitive guests will find interesting.
Comparing climates, it should be noted that the climate in Cyprus gentler. For example, on the west coast of Rhodes, washed by the Aegean Sea, there are often strong winds at any time of the year. The climate in the east of Rhodes, where the coast is washed by the Mediterranean Sea, is better. If on the west coast there are pebble beaches, on the east they are mostly sandy. The sea in Rhodes warms up a little later than in Cyprus and in the fall becomes cooler before Cyprus.
Prices on hotel accommodation, meals at restaurants, the usual souvenirs slightly lower than in Rhodes than in Cyprus and many other Greek resorts, which can be explained, in particular, due to the relatively low level of taxation, such as VAT.
In our view, those who are planning a relaxing holiday away from the bustle of the city,should opt for the eastern part of the island, and for young people who are looking for lively entertainment – the western part, where there are many entertainment options.
On the other hand, families with children may not be quite interested in Rhodes, as children’s entertainment program (except for excursions to the famous Butterfly Park) are almost non existent. Only a few hotels on the island offer animation programs for children and have a children’s club. Therefore, holidays in Cyprus are more preferable for families with children, because there are numerous water parks and zoos, and in many hotels amusing entertainment programs are presented.
Cyprus vs Santorini
Santorini is an archipelago consisting of five islands, one of which has the same name. The Archipelago is washed by the Aegean Sea and its islands are different from eac other and quite unusual, full of beauty and grace. Santorini received its present appearance in about a half thousand years BC ago as a result of a volcanic eruption.
The tourist season in Santorini lasts from June to September. At this time the weather on the island is hot, but the sea breeze from the Aegean Sea, softens it, and the heat is comfortable enough.
Santorini is for lovers of antiquity: here you can admire the beautiful churches, the Archaeological Museum, the ruins of ancient cities. The landscapes of Santorini leave no one indifferent, and those who once saw the white houses with the blue shutters and witnessed the sunset in Santorini, do not forget those spectacular views. Perhaps that is why this island of the archipelago is very popular among honeymooners, planning a honeymoon, or just a romantic visit to the island from all over the world.
Each year a lot of pilgrims are also attracted to Santorini and plan to go to the holy places, to visit the religious monuments of early Christianity, for example, to visit the ancient Christian church of Panagia Episkopi.
Santorini enjoys a continued popularity among the fans of relaxed and calm vocation, who spend time enjoying the fine cuisine offered in the local traditional taverns, and a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets of the city.
On the other hand, fans of noisy bars and nightclubs are likely to be bored on the island. Therefore, if you are interested in a varied entertainment program, it is better to opt for resorts in Cyprus (Ayia Napa, Limassol) or other islands of Greece and its mainland.
Santorini is also not too popular among the families vacationing with children. It is not famous for children’s entertainment centers, zoos and water parks, so the children will enjoy the sea and the only swimming pool in the hotel. Therefore, if you want to rest and at the same time entertain your children, it is necessary to choose some other option. For example, the Cypriot resorts (Paphos, Ayia Napa, Protaras, Limassol) offer a much more interesting entertainment program for families.
Comparing the prices of goods and services in Santorini and Cyprus, we can say that the prices of services in restaurants and hotels, of souvenirs and essential commodities (sunbeds, beach accessories, etc.) are almost identical.

So, if you prefer a quiet holiday, you can choose any of the islands. As a destination for the youth and families with children, Cyprus, in our opinion, is the leader, in particular, due to the development of infrastructure, a lot of entertainment for children (almost every resort center has a zoo, amusement park, water park, etc.) and a significant number of night clubs and beach bars exist on the island (Limassol and Ayia Napa). In addition, the climate in Cyprus is gentler thanks to the Mediterranean Sea and the tourist season is longer (May-November).
