The 8th International Pharos Festival of Modern Music in Nicosia will commence with the Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire”, performed by Marianne Pousseur and Het Collectief (directed by Robin Engelnom).
The Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” is one of the most original, bold and influential works in the history of music, which marked the beginning of the modernist age. It is based on the poem of the Belgian poet Albert Girot and based on the main attributes of the Pierrot’s character – the traditional Italian comedy del arte and by revealing different points of view on the main problems of the main character: perception of the moonlight, love, religion and death. In this piece, Schoenberg is using the method “SPrechstimme (which he invented himself) – the vocal reading which is somewhere in the middle between normal reading and singing.
