Greece and Russia are closely united by one historical fact, which is not so well-known to the general public, yet it has made a significant impact in the history of both states.
In 1775 Elizaveta II’s released a decree which established cadet corps in St. Petersburg where boys with Greek nationality were studying.
During the years of its operation, some 190 officers have graduated from the institution, including 100 for the navy. Therefore, Russia became the second motherland for many Greek boys, who later on took charge of the navy, took command of the military ports, were appointed as heads of the military educational institutions, were working as the translators and were parts of the embassy staff in Russia.
Today the cadets are presenting the new setting in the history of the both states..
The evening is organized with the support of the Embassy of the Russian Federation, Embassy of Greece, Federal Agency “Rosstotrudnichestvo” and the Fund of Archbishop Makarios III.
